In a humid climate, closed-cell spray foam is the product that does the most jobs at once: it insulates at about R-7 per inch, it forms an air and vapor barrier, and it’s rigid enough to add strength. When moisture is the enemy — which in West Tennessee it usually is — this is the foam we reach for.
The foam’s cells are closed and packed tight, which makes it dense, rigid, and impermeable to air and water vapor. Johns Manville puts closed-cell in the R-7 per inch range — higher than open-cell’s roughly R-3.8 — and that density is why it doubles as a moisture barrier. In our mixed-humid climate, where humidity drives most of the problems in crawl spaces, rim joists, and metal buildings, an insulation that also stops vapor is doing exactly the right job.
Closed-cell costs more per board foot than open-cell, because it’s a denser, higher-performing material. It isn’t automatically right for every job — a large attic that mainly needs an air seal is often better served by open-cell foam. The skill is matching the foam to the problem, and we’ll tell you honestly when your project doesn’t need the premium product. In a crawl space or on a metal building in this climate, though, closed-cell usually earns its keep.
