Not every crawl space needs the full encapsulation system on day one — but nearly every West Tennessee crawl needs a real vapor barrier and proper insulation. This is the moisture-and-comfort foundation that keeps humid air and ground moisture from rotting the wood your house sits on and chilling your floors.
A crawl space takes on moisture two ways: it rises as vapor out of the bare soil, and it blows in as humid air through open vents. In our mixed-humid climate, both run hard — the ground is damp and the outside air is muggy for about four and a half months of the year. A ground vapor barrier addresses the first source; sealing and insulating addresses the second and keeps the floor above from following the outdoor temperature.
In a damp crawl, you don’t just want insulation — you want insulation that also resists moisture. Closed-cell spray foam does both: at about R-7 per inch (manufacturer figure) it insulates, and because it’s a vapor barrier it doesn’t soak up the humidity around it the way fiberglass batts do. Batts in a humid crawl tend to absorb moisture, sag, fall, and grow mold — which is exactly the fallen, ruined insulation we so often clear out before doing the job right.
